Hi,

i have implemented user level security and have a
system.mdw file residing in the same network folder as the
database. I have set command line parameters so that the
database opens and uses this system file.

However, when another user, other than myself, tries to
open the database, they are prompted for the network
password for my PC. I thought i had this sorted with the
command line parameters, which work for me.

any suggestions? should i create a new system file using
work group admin? how can i be sure that the above wont
happen again?

thanks in advance

Brian

Hi Brian,

Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like the database and/or the MDW
resides on your PC.

Thereby, it's like a user trying to open any file (Excel, Word, Notepad) on
your PC they will get prompted for the password (unrelated to Access User
Level Security).

Check sharing out the folder where the MDB and MDW files resides.

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please
respond back to this posting.

Hi Eric,

thanks for your reply.
Both the database, and the MDW file reside in a shared
folder on a network drive (that all users have acess to)
I created a new .mdw file by using wrkgrpadmin.exe (on my
PC - could this be the problem?) and placed it in this
shared folder with the actual .mdb file.
When i open the database using the command line parameters
for this .mdw file i can see that both the database
and .mdw file are in use from the .ldb files in the folder.
Still whenever any1 else opens the database, it prompts
for the network password for my own PC.

I hope this can be resolved as the database goes live in 2
weeks.

Many Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian,

You users are getting prompted by Windows (unrelated to Access). Check
your Windows permissions on the folder.

Hi Eric,

thanks for you input.

it is asking for the log on to a My own User Pc, not the
network.

It is saying:
"Incorrect username or unknown password for \\MyPCName\c$"

this is unrelated to the permissions on the network drive,
to which i am positive they have access, as they can
browse all files, add, modify etc.

We had a similar problem with MDBs and MDWs placed on our local
fileserver within our intranet.

As I recall, the problem had nothing to do with the MDB or MDW or
Access. It had to do with the shortcut that we were using to launch
them. The shortcut specified the path to Access as "C:\...".
However, because of Windows "smart shortcuts", when someone other than
the creator of the shortcut launched it, Windows tried to launch the
Access executable from the shortcut creator's local drive.

We have used two different solutions. One was to launch it with a
vbs/wsh file that determined the location of the executable on the
local machine. The other was a vbs/wsh "install" file that created a
shortcut and Start menu option on the local machine, first finding the
path to the Access executable.

Thanks Bruce,

that would make sense, as i mapped to the drive, and
copied the shortcut from my PC.

I will try remote accessing the PC and creating it locally
and see if it helps

thanks

Brian
