I'm running XP Professional on a machine with 512MB RAM
and a 90% empty 100GB hard drive. Though I haven't
changed my system or the applications on it, recently I
have been getting frequent alerts saying my system is low
on virtual memory. Does anyone know what might have
caused this and how to solve the problem? Thanks much
for any suggestions!

The system is running low on resources. This means that there are too many
applications that load at the startup and/or run in the background. The best
thing to do is to disable the background applications.

To do that,
1. click start - run, type MSCONFIG and press enter.
2. Click the Startup tab and uncheck all the background applications that
load at the startup.
3. Click Apply and OK. restart the computer when prompted.

This should help.

Kumaran

John,

Start Task Manager and see what is using up your memory.

Add physical memory.

Enlarge the paging file.

Check for spyware. Use HijackThis, Spybot S&D, and expert advice at
SWI Forums (all free). Complete instructions are available at:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=5187

What size is the paging file?

Get Process Explorer (free) from <http://www.sysinternals.com/>, to
provide more detail than Task Manager. Get Startup Monitor and
Startup Control Panel (free) from <http://www.mlin.net/> to provide
control over what programs are started automatically when you startup.

Is that your actual email address in From:? Learn to munge properly.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

.
start--control panel--performance and maintenance--
system icon--advance tab--under performance click
settings button--advance tab on that--under virtual
memory click change button--IT'S PROBABLY ON CUSTOM AT
1.5 X, either change the settings higher or do what I do--
put the bullet in system managed size--click set--OK--OK--
then restart your computer ,that will take care of it.
