I just installed a new 30 GB drive to a Sony VAIO 210 (Pentium II
w/200 watt PS). After fdisk, partioning, format, installing Windows
98SE everything worked fine. Then I downloaded and installed all the
Microsoft Critical Updates (about 17 of these). Then the system
becomes unstable, the mouse locks up, get the blue screen, especially
after closing a window, clicking the Start button, or waking up after
hibernation. I ran scandisk and dxdiag with no errors found. Any
hints please?

Can you still get into your system? If so, try booting into safe mode
and uninstall all of the updates in question one by one until you get
them off of your machine, reboot, and see if this at least can correct
the situation. If it does then the problem would be directly attributed
to the updates. I would suggest getting a complete service pack instead
of going through the update routine on the MS website, 98 SE is no
longer supported by MS, but there should be an older service pack
somewhere on their website.

Most of the updates won't be uninstallable.... look into add remove programs(cntrl panel) if any of the updates appear there try
losing those and see if it helps... although there are many 'critical' updates, read through them and determine which of these
pertains to you, not all do.
