Running Win2k with SP4. With no applications running the system will
lockup and requires a reboot. Sometimes it will go for a day or so
and other time it will happen less than an hour after a reboot.

I have watched task manager to see if any program is running in the
background that is not obvious from the regular screen. Nothing. The
CPU use will go from 0 to 2 or 3%. Sure would appreciate any ideas
any one can offer.

On days that it locks up quickly, is the room temperature
higher?
What do the error logs say? (Control Panel, Administrative
Tools, Error Viewer)
Whens the last time you ran CHKDSK /F?
Have you ever run CHKDSK /R? Everyone should at least once.

http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/msblast.shtml

although the removal tool link is incorrect ... it should be

ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/F-Lovsan.zip

also

right click on My Computer icom
select properties

the system properties box will now come up

goto advanced

startup and ... button

untick the automatically reboot box .... at least if it crashes
again you will see the crash blue screen which contains details
of what contributed to the crash

also

check the fans and the PSU in the machine are working properly
