I trying to figure out what's causing my friends computer
to shut down automatically. It randomally does it after
different times of being on. For example sometimes it's
like 20min after being on and sometimes it could be an
hour or more. She's running XP professional. I have
scanned for viruses and it's clean. I am stumped, I am
starting to think it could a hardware problem.

I suspect that your suspicions are true. To see the error message, turn
of "automatic restart", which is XP's default behavior.

Control Panel|SYSTEM|ADVANCED|START UP AND RECOVERY. UNcheck the box.

What video card do u have?

After direcX 9b was released it caused reboots on machines with tv out/in
video cards. If you have such video card try going to manufacturers site and
download new drivers and also WDM driver (must be installed after main
driver) Otherwise ask him what software or hardware were installed cause
this could be the problem also. If computer has nero burning rom or easy cd
creator installed, it could be the problem also. In this case u need to
disable xp cd burning feature it's in services. Go to start > programs>
administrative tools > services. Find cd burning service right click on it
and choose disable. Also u can acess administrative tools from control
panel.

Good Luck

P.S. Do updates also http:www.windowsupdate.com
