Hi guys,

When I click the System item in the Control Panel as well as when I click the Properties of MyComputer absolutely nothing happens so I cannot access my system settings. Using System Restore and sfc /scannow doesn't help. My earliest restore point is probably not old enough to fix this. I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP1. I also noticed that when I go to shutdown the computer it tells me that rundll32.exe is not responding and asks me to shut it down. Apparently run32dll.exe is somehow involved in the execution of sysdm32.cpl and crashes while doing so. Any suggestions as to how to procede from here?

Thank you for your help

Dmitry

Dmitry;
I have XP Home and in mine it's sysdm.cpl.
What happens if you >>
Start | Run | Type: control sysdm.cpl | OK
Does this open System Properties for you?

Sorry, you are right. The name of the file is sysdm.cpl

The System Dialog doesn't open using any of the methods suggested. Neither with control sysdm.cpl nor by just typing sysdm.cpl In both cases the rundll32.exe hangs while still hanging on to sysdm.cpl. I can't move delete sysdm.cpl unless I kill rundll32.exe first

Dmitry;
sysdm.cpl lives at C:\WINDOWS\system32 and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

Go to both places and double click sysdm.cpl. If the one in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache works; delete the other one.
Then copy and paste sysdm.cpl from C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
to C:\WINDOWS\system32

Or maybe you can expand from your XP CD
D:\I386\SYSDM.CP_

Similar problems (plural) from the win98 usenet newgroup. Take a look
at this for guidance. Something is corrupting the rundll32 file ... I
have not heard the source of the problem yet. Nevertheless ...

"Extract a new copy of RUNDLL32.EXE from either your Windows XP or
from the CAB files on your hard drive, whichever you have, to the
Windows folder, using the "Extract one file" option of System File
Checker (SFC)."

I have exactly this same problem .. XP pro.
How do I extract a single file from the XP disk?? ... haven't ever done this .. was thinking of re-installing xp but couldn't even do this .. restoring has not helped either.
