I am trying to installl a program on my new win xp pc that I use on my win 98
pc's that is required for my business. The program is a virtual port
replicator. When I try to install it on the win xp pc's it wont install. An
error message comes up that says " A third party replacement for the windows
virtual communications driver (VCD) has been put into the SYSTEM.INI file and
setup cannot continue". Please advise. Thank you.

Did you check with the vendor to make sure that the program is
compatible with Windows XP?

It sounds like it is NOT compatible with WinXP as the "virtual port replicator" relies on
DOS calls and DOS is not a part of WinXP.

You need to find a WinXP compatible substitute software or change your the function of your
business is performed.

You could try running the installer in compatability mode for Windows 98
(right-click the executable > Properties > Compatability).

Otherwise, you could open up your system.ini files in notepad, to see if
there's a particular line that might be causing the problem. Here's mine
for comparison's sake.

; for 16-bit app support
[drivers]
wave=mmdrv.dll
timer=timer.drv
[mci]
[driver32]
[386enh]
woafont=dosapp.FON
EGA80WOA.FON=EGA80WOA.FON
EGA40WOA.FON=EGA40WOA.FON
CGA80WOA.FON=CGA80WOA.FON
CGA40WOA.FON=CGA40WOA.FON

Thanks for the replies. I tried changing the compatability mode but that
didnt work. the same error message comes up. here is my system.ini file:

I dont see anything in there regarding a third party VCD. The program I am
trying to install is called turbocomVIP from pacific commware. The error
message also says to contact pacific commware to fix this isue but I think
they might be out of business as I havent been able to find them. If anyone
has a recomendation of a program that will work on xp for what I need please
advise. Thank you.

You may want to work on plan "B", see below

"(For Windows 95/98 only; ViP doesn't support Windows NT,2k, or ME.)"
