When i try to open System Information, this pops up, "Windows cannot open
Help and Support because a system service is not sunning. To fix this
problem, start a service named Help and Support." Sorry this doesn't have to
do with windows defender, but i dont know where else to turn. If you know
how to fix this, please respond. Thanks.

If you go to a command prompt and do:

net start "help and support

and hit enter, what happens?

C:\Documents and Settings\Kev>net start "help and support"
System error 1058 has occurred.

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

Hmm - not sure what the possibilites are here.

If you do net start, and hit enter, is "Remote Procedure call (RPC)" listed?

Yeah--that would have been noticeable in other ways.

I'll try to do some research, I did some before I posted that thought, but
none of it was "aha--that's probably it." This error message can come up in
conjunction with a number of services, and the real meaning differs with the
specific service.

Ok, Thanks Anyway.
Also, when I opened Windows Update 2 weeks ago, windows update said to open
services.msc, and enable automatic updates and something else that I forgot.
I enabled them, and Windows Update worked. But today, when i checked for
updates for windows defender, nothing happened. Then I went to Windows
Update, and they were disabled again. I'm not sure why automatic updates and
the other thingy (forgot what it was) became disabled again, but maybe it has
to do with system information not working?

I think the problem is that i used ccleaner, and it deleted or altered the
index.dat file in C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\OfflineCache, which caused the
error. I got that theory from this site,
http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/lofiversion/index.php/t13413.html and
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_m.htm#msinfo32, if this is the problem,
any of u guys know where i can get another index.dat file for system
information? sorry if im posting too much about this (especially if it has
nothing to do with windows defender).

Hi,

To re-build the index.dat file needed in the
C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\OfflineCache folder, and thereby fix the problem
of the Help Center showing up when trying to open System Information
(msinfo32.exe), among other problems, follow these instructions:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm

Note that this procedure may affect OEM customizations to the Help and
Support Center, giving you the non-customized Windows XP default view. Too,
it would be advisable to make a backup copy of the index.dat file in
question,
once rebuilt, in case a 3rd party cleaner is used, and it's deleted.

Also, copying an index.dat from another computer's OfflineCache folder will
probably allow you to open msinfo32.exe, but the Help Center won't work
correctly, say, if one computer is XP Home and the other is XP Pro, or one is
an OEM modified version of Help Center, and the other is not, or if it is a
different OEM (e.g., one is Sony, the other is Hewlett-Packard).

Hope this helps,
Dean

Thanks very much!
