I know this has nothing to do with Windows Defender, but I have the same
problem as the person in 5/9/06 that wrote the topic "System Information" in
general. When I checked the place in my comp for that index.dat file, it
wasn't there, can anyone show me where to get one if any? A guy in a forum
that had two computers just copied the file from there, according to that guy.

Sorry, I cannot understand what your problem is; you'll have to be a
little bit more detailed if you expect any help. The index.dat files on
my system are all Internet Explorer related.

I am not sure, but I believe this may be a problem cause by using CleanUP. I
have heard that it can delete an index.dat file that renders the Windows Help
Center unusable. I have not seen this myself and unfortunately I do not know
how to solve the problem.

Hi,

To re-build the index.dat file needed in the
C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\OfflineCache folder, and thereby fix the problem
of the Help Center showing up when trying to open System Information
(msinfo32.exe), among other problems, follow these instructions:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm

Note that this procedure may affect OEM customizations to the Help and
Support Center, giving you the non-customized Windows XP default view. Too,
it would be advisable to make a backup copy of the index.dat in question,
once rebuilt: certain 3rd party "cleaners" have been known to remove it.

Hope this helps,
Dean
