On a Windows 2000 system (not the one with the missing CD-ROM drive
I mentioned yesterday) I invoked Start / Programs / Accessories / System
Information. My user has Administrator privilege.

Under System Summary it said, "The connection to could not be
established. Check to see that the network path name is correct,
that you have suffic..."

I checked Action / Properties and found that Local Computer was checked
(not "Another Computer").

I checked Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services and found
that Windows Management Information was running and had been started
automatically. I re-started it but that didn't help.

Any more ideas?

To which Steve Parry said:

Thank you, Steve. I followed the steps in that article and now
System Information works correctly; it returns the expected infomation
about memory, processor, etc.

I don't know why this was necessary, i.e. how the permissions got
mucked up. I had previously changed permission on user files but
never on any of the system files or registry keys.
