I have a problem with what appears to be Windows XP hibernation/power management on an HP Pavilion deskside

First, the machine is a 1.8 AMD HP Pavilion, 256 M memory, 40 G disk running XP Family edition. All the proposed windows updates have been installed since buying the machine a year ago and Norton live update is activated

Since about 10 days, if I let the machine go to hibernation/power savings mode with no particular application running, it appears to be impossible to reactivate the system with mouse movement or keyboard action. In addition, the start/stop button is ineffective and I have to unpug/replug the power to reboot

In the year or so I have had the machine, this behaviour has not been previously observed

Thank you in advance for your help/pointers

This is a known problem with notebooks running XP. Don't know of any fixes,
but someone please prove me wrong!!!

Hibernation saves the contents of RAM to disk and powers off the machine.
To resume from a hibernate state starts out the same as a cold boot, turn
the power on. Once the barebones of Windows is loaded the data stored in
hiberfil.sys is restored.
