system hangs when restarting

when trying to restart a win 2000 system, the system hangs
and you must power cycle the system to get the system to
come back up. where and how do i begin to troubleshoot
this problem.

-failure to gracefully exit windows can often times be a driver not
unloading or a service not unloading

-try uninstalling recently installed applications or drivers to see if
that helps. do this one at a time so you know which fixes it.

-if that doesnt work, boot into safe mode and disable drivers from
there

-check your event viewer for any helpful messages

-cd writier software from roxio caused my system not to gracefully
exit so I removed it and switched to record now max.. just an idea
