system hangs when playing video

Initially, when I clicked a *.wmv file to play with WMP-10, the video portion
would freeze on the first frame and the audio would play through. Stopping
the video or closing the app would result in a total system hang (no keyboard
response and a beep on the first mouse click).
This issue affects all media players (Real, etc) on my system now.

I've tried upgrading to WMP-11, to no avail.

Currently running Win XP Pro on AMD Athlon XP 1700+ with 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon
7000 with 64MB VRAM. Use BitDefender for AV and spyware, which were not
detected.
