System Hang on Boot up

Hi all,

When booting up my pc, it passes the Windows XP splash screen, but when it reaches the desktop, all shortcuts, buttons etc load, however the mouse continues to show the "egg timer" so am unable to select anything.

I have left the pc on for over an hour but still no use to get it fully booted up. Any help on troubleshooting will be great appreciated.

Hi.

Is the hard drive light on continuously?
Does the machine start in "safe mode"?
