I have a copy of Windows 2000 pro that I recieved two
years ago through a Microsoft sponsered program. My
computer is a Intel Celeron 1.1Ghz with a ATI Radeon 7500
graphics card (I think that's the only relevant
information). My rpblem is this.... during installation,
everything works fine and dandy, I can format to NTFS,
boot Windows 2000 installation, and it starts to install.
As expected, the screen flickers for a while during the
installation, but it doesn't stop: for about 40 seconds it
flickers and then a get the "blue screen of death" stating
that the system has halted. I've tried installing several
times, once or twice on FAT32 (which I despise) but all
with the same result. I really love Windows 2000, it's the
best OS out there, I'ld really like to use it. Please help!

Blue Screen of Death should have an error message. If it is a Stop error,
that can be looked up in the KB. Any other messages can probably be looked
up as well.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

I don't think a clean install woudl do any good (thats the
only type of install I've used). I'm absolutely sure drive
letters have nothing to do with it.

Paul,
I know that XP is touchy about hardware, expect 2k is also.
One problem I have encountered was when machines were built using the old 40
conductor IDE cables, but using ATA66 or higher drives and controllers.
You could also try setting the BIOS default values to the safe default
settings rather than any optimised settings.
