I am running WIN2K and I have McAfee VirusScan and McAfee Firewall running.
When I hit My Computer there is a very pregnant pause before the drives,
etc. show. Ditto the same with most other clicks on icons, very slow
response. I have scanned for viruses as well as worms, etc. Nothing shows
up. Any hints or suggestions?
This could well have a very simple answer. Have you arranged your computer to spin-down
the hard drive after a few minutes of idleness? I have a laptop that spins down the hard drive
after five minutes without access. Upon awaking it takes a few extra seconds to get its act
together, appearing as delayed action of any function you try to use which depends on the had drive.
The small inconvenience of delay is far offset by long battery life and less physical wear on the drive.
To see if a battery-saving spin-down function is slowing your computer, play a few games of Solataire,
which doesn't make much use of the disk, so it eventually spins down. Then try some other program
and it will probably wait three or four seconds before anything happens, as the hard drive comes to life again.
If you'd prefer to disable the automatic spin-down, you may find a function in your computer's setup program
or BIOS setup, something like "stop hard drive after __ seconds". Enter a zero to prevent spin-down altogether.
