System goes to sleep...

Greetings all... here is the setup:

P4 3.06 HT
Asus P4S8X-X
Asus 9280 (NVIDIA Ti-4200)
TT Silent PurePower 480w PSU -
+3.3V@30A;+5V@40A;[email protected];+12V@18A;[email protected];+5VSB@2A
Creative SB Live 5.1
512mb RAM PC2700

Latest and greatest BIOS, Drivers and Direct X

When playing Tiger Woods 2004 intermittently upon completing a hole the
monitor will go into sleep mode and will not come out unless I reboot. I
have been over this issue with Asus MULTIPLE times with no luck and I'm out
alot of time and money.

First they claim it was the video card and send me one (my cost to speed up
the shipping) plus they charged my CC for a crossship. My cost as well to
send back the old card... DID NOT FIX IT!!!

Second they claimed it was the setup... so I completely rebuild on another
HDD as per their instructions and it still happens.

Third they claim that my PSU must have at least 28A on the +3.3v, mine had
22A so I purchase a nice shiny new PSU with 30A on the +3.3v.... guess
what... SAME RESULT!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Nix the "nospam" if you wish to

My generic prescription -

Test the system in this order:

1) Memtest86+ from memtest.org . This program will format a blank
floppy, to make a standalone boot disk containing just the test
program. It should be error free in an overnight test.
2) Get a copy of Prime95 or SuperPI, to test for CPU stability.
Since you've done step (1) already, errors can be blamed on the
CPU or Northbridge on the motherboard. These programs load
the processor and make it heat up. Check the temperature while
the test programs run in Windows, using MBM5 or Asus Probe (not
both - only one installed at a time).
3) Get a copy of 3dMark2001se. This is a 3D test program and I use
it in demo mode, for long term 3D stability testing. If it gives
errors concerning compatibility, update your drivers. Since you've
already tested the memory and CPU, a failure now means the AGP
slot is defective, or the video card is having a problem. Using
the monitor program installed for step (2), enable the logging
function in MBM5 or Asus Probe, so you can later look in the
.txt log file, to spot any dips in power level. For example, a
guy on here in the last couple of days, had a problem with the
ATX power connector which caused a low power reading. His PS was
still healthy. Some older motherboards seem to have a lot of
problems with +3.3V staying at normal levels.

Do the drivers for SB Live like Hyperthreading ? Try disabling
Hyperthreading and see if the problem disappears.

Disabling Hyperthreading also reduces CPU max power dissipation
and can sometimes stabilize a CPU Vcore regulator power problem.

Check Google to see if there were any issues with SIS chipset
drivers.

buy a buget board and most times you get bugs...welcome to the "beta"
program...

personally, I would stick with "intel" chipsets for the "P4" CPU...

3rd party chipsets are most always reverse engineered...just ask "VIA"

I have the same motherboard and never had a problem. I have a 2.4 Celeron
running at overclocked to 3.2. I had a problem like that once on another
setup and it turned out to be a problem with my video card. When it goes
into sleep mode do you mean that hard drive shuts down or is there still
activity on the drive. Try to do an alt tab and see if the hard drive
flashes. If it still flashes are you still getting sound from the game. I
would also try a different monitor. The monitor might be on its way out. I
have seen monitors that are going to fail show this symptom when they are
going. Is the video card an 8X agp? If it is try lowering the agp to 4x in
the bios. Have you tried running the system with the covers off? It may be
a heat build up issue. Also try a older version of NVIDIA drivers. Use the
45's they should support your card. 3D games put more stress on your video
card and cause it to heat up. Use the mother board monitor software and
watch your voltages and temps.
