Greetings again,
Is there a program/tool available in XP Home (or third
party) that will check the integrity of system files such
as there was in Win ME?

You can run the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
Click Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
In the open box, type sfc /scannow (including space) and then click OK.
Note that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP installation CD.

My thanks to both Carey and Wes for their insight and
assistance, greatly appreciated. Indeed calc.exe was
restored when orginal renamed. What fun !!
