Hey all, I could use some help with this problem. A friend of mine
asked me to see if I could get her some answers to her troubles as she
is unable to get on the net. She is running xp home with sp2. The pc
starts to boot then she gets: serial-ch1 master: no device
serial ch 0 master: wdc wd800jo-75lsao

Heres what comes up after she has disabled automatic restart on system
failure.
stop:0000021a {fatal system error}
the windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with
a status of 0x0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
The system has been shut down.
I don't know the processor type, but she did say that she recently
had the psu replaced. Could the hd have been damaged when the psu
died?
She said that she took the pc to MDG to have the psu changed, would
they not have noticed if the hd was toast when they did the service?
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Those look like normal boot messages, I'd advise you to ignore them.

System files damaged, possibly by malware/spyware/virus/trojan activity.

YES, that is quite possible. It is quite common, unfortunately.
She said that she took the pc to MDG to have the psu changed, would

Not necessarily. If malware, symptom might not have been present when PSU
was replaced. Or, if hard drive was damaged, the symptoms of damage might
not appear right away.
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Use System Restore to restore to a point before the PSU was replaced. I'm
not sure that the PSU replacement is not a red herring, but you need to
restore the system to some time in the past, so 'before the PSU was
replaced' seems as good a point as any to try.

If you can log in at any point (even in safe mode/f8 as system is booting),
run a full virus scan. Oh, and if the system is "protected" (read:
severely ****ed) by Norton anything, UNINSTALL THAT IMMEDIATELY!!! If it
passes the full virus scan (all local drives), run ad-aware SE to see what
that finds. Then run a DIFFERENT virus scan, full. Some good freebies
follow. -Dave

Mike , thanks for your quick reply. The reason that I asked if the
drive might be toast is that she is unable to boot into safe mode/f8.
I have also been using Google to see if I can get any more info. and
have read that XP Home version users have had troubles with this when
they have downloaded hotfixes or patches with the following kb
numbers, 890859, 893066, 890923, 890086.
I am hoping that she will bring the tower to me so that I can get
more info first hand.
Hopefully this can be resolved without her having to purchase a new
hd.
