Okay... here's the situation...

My dad has had a P4S333 motherboard for more than a year now running both a
Radeon 8500 and a GeForce TI4200 with no problems. For Christmas we got him
an All-in-Wonder 9600 Pro and now the system won't even POST. The only
thing that happens is the POST speech reporter saying over and over "System
failed CPU test". When I take out the new card and put the old card back it
boots up fine (although I have to re-configure the BIOS settings for the
CPU.) I've tested the AIW card in another PC and it works fine, so I know
it is not the video card. The only thing I can think of is that the
motherboard's 4x AGP slot is not liking the 8x capabilities of the AIW card,
although the AIW supports both 4x and 8x. I've consulted the manuals for
the video card and the motherboard over and over.... The P4S333 has a 4x
AGP slot (1.5 volts) and the AIW card supports both 8x (.8 volts) and 4x
(1.5 volts)....... So I'm pretty much at a loss. According to the paperwork
everything should work fine. I've updated the BIOS and have even cleared
CMOS a few times to no avail.

Can you guys (and gals) think of anything that I could try? Is there anyway
of forcing the motherboard (or video card) to 4x? Thanks in advance.

AG:

The P4S333 ( a fine SiS/Asus mobo ) has a poor reputation for supporting
8x vidcards. See below for many current comments:

The P4S333/533 have a habit of doing this - generally on cold on boot.

I kept sending mine back till I got one that behaved.

I'm having the same problem right now with a radeon 9600 pro. Can't seem to
find a solution to it. Some people said to upgrade the MB to a p4pe, which
would solve the problem

I think an 8X vidcard in the P4S333 is "over-reaching" ... if not exactly
impossible. In a recent upgrade, KUDZU had noproblemo automagically
installing a
CTech_GF4-440<64>(4x) in my RedHat_8/P4@2a box. That system's been
rock-solid all
year while I dump in piece_after_piece of legacy hardware. No fluxxing
with BIOS either!
imho .... Not using an 8x vidcard is a small
price to pay for the bulletproof, friendly stability of that mobo. Folks
who want to suffer have MANY other ( ASUS/ABIT etc ) mobo options.

Thanks for the responses, peeps. Basically the vibe I'm getting is that I'm
screwed unless I buy another motherboard. I went ahead and e-mailed ASUS in
hopes of getting some help, but I'm more and more expecting to need a new
motherboard. And it's not that I'm die hard on having 8x, but there's not
really any other way to get a modern GPU without going 8x... and why would
you? I mean, that would be limiting yourself against the future, wouldn't
it? Plus, the P4S333 is a good board with the exception of this one problem
and I really would like to keep it around. What's really frustrating is
that I'm running a P4T-E which is also only 4x, but it's running fine with
my new Radeon 9600 XT and it also had no problems with the Radeon 9600 AIW
that I'm trying to install in my dad's PC. Strange things afoot, I tells
ya. And I've pretty much done everything I can think of to that P4S333....
upgraded the BIOS, reset the CMOS, prayed to the God of Asus... nothing
seems to work.

Well, again, thanks for your help. If you think of anything else I can try
I'll be much obliged.
