system does not show dvd inserted in burner

When I insert a blank dvd in my NEC cd drive, the system (xp) pops up the
window stating a cd has been inserted and asks which program I want to use.
No matter what I do, the system never recognizes that I have inserted a blank
dvd and not a blank cd. It used to work fine and only recently malfunctioned.
Therefore now I can't burn a dvd which is what I want to do. There must be a
software fix.

I tried using a stand alone drive (Toshiba) plugged into the usb ports --
same results.

You'll probably need to reinstall the software used to burn DVD's; the
association that normally recognizes that a DVD was inserted has
probably been damaged, or removed.
