System disk and Raid 5

Both my servers (Compaq Pro 800's)have 4 disks configured
with a hardware Raid 5.
My understanding is that Raid 5 cannot protect the system
disk.
If C should fail will I loose all the data on my other
disks?

Thanks!!

C: should be in the RAID5 container, and therefore be protected.

If you - for some reason - have your operating system installed on a
separate disk, then you can loose your operating system, while your RAID5
container would still be intact, and accessible as soon as your RAID
controller driver is installed.

Best regards

Gary,

The restriction you're thinking of for RAID 5 is software RAID 5. Hardware
RAID 5 does not know anything about the software OS being installed on it.
It also depends on how you partition the logical RAID volume that appears to
Win2k.

We have the Compaq Proliant 1600s with Raid 5 and as long as the C: was
partition from the Raid array it is protected. when we frist set up the raid
array we removed each drive and rebooted the server to prove this to the
MIS/IT Director.
