Bonnie

Just upgraded from 98SE to XP Home. In trying to run Norton
WinDoctor, it starts out by telling me I can't run it because I've got
a missing file, Windows/system.dat.
So I take a look, and I've got some (apparent) backups of
system.dat dated years ago, Actually, the backups have the earmarks
of being made by "yours truly", who knows why. Anyway, I tried
renaming the newest file to system.dat. The system still runs OK, but
in Norton, now get a slightly different message, something about that
system.dat file and registry.
How can I re-develop this file?
Thanks, Bonnie

You can't. System.dat is unused in XP. You need to install the NT versions from the CD not the 9x version. A lot of it will crash your computer.

Oops, sorry, I should have made it clear that this is a brand new
Norton"SystemWorks" for XP........

It sounds like it has several versions of Norton's programs on it. As they've done in the past. There is no System.dat in XP. It's a 98 file. You may be installing a 98 version instead of a NT or XP (NT5.1) version or maybe 2000 (NT5.0).

Thanks David, I checked, the Norton is a multi-OS type, but is
installed for XP, according to info on "about" tab in Norton.
I did a search for the system.dat files, and found a few references in
"windows/sysbackup/" .cab files
Then I searched registry, and found 3 references there.
I'm guessing that Norton isn't actually searching for that file on
it's own, but rather, because there are references to it left in the
registry. Maybe I neglected to mention that it's in the"WinDoctor",
"registry" posrtion of testing that brings this error message.
Thanks for the concern, Bonnie
