One reason computers crash unexpectedly is an overheated
CPU, perhaps caused by overclocking or heavy use during
gaming. Make sure your vents aren't plugged by
dust-bunnies etc. and that the fans are working the way
they should be. You should be able to locate a utility
that displays your CPU temperature if you use Google.

Another reason is infection by poorly written
spyware/trojans/parasites/etc. etc. You don't mention what
security precautions you've taken but if you haven't done
the basics you are never going to have a particularly
stable computer. Find out about basic security at:

If you do happen to find a trojan they can be difficult to
remove. The following advice, courtesy Kent W. England,
Microsoft MVP for Windows Security should help.

Trojans are stealthy and not always found by anti-virus
software. If you find suspicious processes running or task
manager or regedit is being killed after opening, you might
want to try one of the following tools to check for trojans
(after scanning with at least two anti-virus tools to get
rid of the easy stuff).

DiamondCS TDS-3 - Trojan Defence Suite (TDS), leading
anti-trojan system for Windows: http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/

removes trojans: http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter.jsp

I have an HP laptop with a Athlon Duron 1000 ghz processor. Everyone once in a while I will have problems with crashing where the computer will lock up solid with no mouse control and I will have to hard reboot. I have wiped the drive clean by doing a full format and fully reinstalling Windows XP. I did this because I suspected viruses. That didn't do the trick. I then had a computer store check on the cooling fan to see if working properly. It was fine. Next I replaced the processor chip, and this did not solve the problem. HELP. Any ideas?
