Recently my WindowsXP SP2 system has been crashing/locking with the
following message on a "blue screen" :

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your coputer.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
If this is the first time you have seen this message reboot your computer.
If you have seen this message before contact your system administrator.
STOP:0X00000000A (0X00000166.OX000000002.0X00000000,0X804E59C3)
Beginning Dump of Physical Memory
Dump complete.

Windows "knowledge base" indicate this may be because of a bad driver. The
only recent hardware put in was a second 512K chip of Kingston memory (exact
ssame as the other 512K chip), into a FIC AD-11 mb running a AMD1.33 Athalon
processor. Video is ATI 8500 and sound is SB Gamer both with current
drivers.

As I cannot "cause" this crash to occur (it seems to happen intermitantly)
how do I trouble shoot this?

The memory chips are probably not the same, perhaps they are different
speeds or different timings, but your memory is probably causing this
problem. I had the exact same problem with same error messages and I
fixed it by removing the oldest stick of memory and replacing it with a
new stick.

In my case, I had one stick of PC2100 and one stick of PC2700. I
replaced the 2100 with a 2700 from Crucial that is identicle to the 2700
already in the system and the problem vanished. FYI, my hardware is
completely different from yours.

Always run memtest86 for a few hours looping, after any
memory change, before ever booting to OS to help minimize
potential file/data corruption. http://www.memtest86.com

It is true that a bad driver can cause it, but with no
driver changes and a memory change, that'd be the first
thing to focus on. You might find some benefit to manually
relaxing the bios memory settings, choosing higher numbers
for CAS for example. Memory tweaking is beyond the scope of
a newsgroup post but Google should find several guides. if
the bios has no adjustability (might be necessary to disable
"auto" or "SPD" to see the settings) then you're left with
either trying to lower the FSB (and run memory at same,
synchronous to FSB speed) or replacing the memory.

I did the memtest before posting this thred and it gave me nothing; that's
what's baffeling me. What do you mean by "choosing higher numbers
