Occasionally when I start up my PC, the "System" (in Task
Mgr Processes) is using 100% of my CPU. Why? The only way
out of it is to shutdown and reboot. Sometimes this takes
2 or 3 shutdowns.

Can someone help?

If you are running Norton System Works this could be the problem. System Works had a conflict with the windows update in ME. It would make 26,000 ( oem*.inf ) files with zero kb. On boot or when you do a Windows update the cpu goes wide open. MS has a fix but it doesn't stay fixed. Search for oem*.inf If you have thousands of empty files this might be your problem. See MS Q28196

I am running Norton, but was long before this showed up. I
am also running XP Pro. I will check for the oem files.
Would they still be there after reboot?

Yes. The only thing using the CPU is image name "System"

When this happens have you looked in Task Manager to see
what program is taxing the cpu?

If you are running on a laptop try to power on without
the ext power and then while xp boots connect the
external power. this fixes it for me. I read that the
problem was known and relates the battery status in some
way. if you are on a desktop then i don't know what it
is. graham.
