I'm assuming pretty much everyone uses it. If you're familiar with OEM
products, then you've heard of SYSPREP. This is XPE's equivalent. It
"seals" the image for reproduction. After you've run FBRESEAL (auto or
manual) you can then turn off the machine and make copies of your image.
These images will regen a SID when they boot.
FYI: If you do any manual configuration of your image, set cmiResealPhase
from 12000 to 0. That stops FBA from running the reseal for you
automatically. You'd then run it manually when you're ready to make copies
of your image.
John said:So this is something to create a SID? If you are going to deploy the
image to multiple computers would you still need Ghost or Deploy
Center if you use this component? I thought each of the above vendors
have some sort of SID generator where they modify the image on
deployment. Would this component merely preclude you from needing to
run the thrid party SID generator?
Also, do you have any opinions on Symantec Ghost vs Powerquest deploy
center, partition magic, etc?
Actually, this is something to revert the creating of a SID. FBA creates a
SID normally for you. You wouldn't want to make copies of that SID in each
image you deploy. Once you have sealed your image, you are free to Ghost
(or any copy mechanism) the drive image in production. When each copy
boots, it will create a new SID.
We (Avnet) sell Symantec Ghost and therefore I have a fair amount of
experience with that tool. I haven't used powerquest so I can't really
compare fairly. That being said though, we've had great success with Ghost
along with our OEM partners.
