System clock resets on boot (XP)

My dad is having a problem with his system clock. It resets to year 2000
everytime the computer is booted up. He's using a 1.7GHz Celeron with
Win XP SP2.

The obvious suggestion is the motherboard battery, which he has just
replaced, but the problem remains.

At the same time this started happening, WinXP would hang at the Welcome
screen and not go futher for many minutes. He has since disabled the
logon screen (which was never in use in the first place) and that has
'solved' the problem, but it's obviously still there and could be
related to the system clock.

I've looked all over the web for solutions and found none...

Thanks for any feedback,
Prizm

This might be a silly question, but after the battery was
replaced, had he ever gone into the bios, changed the time
and _saved_ the changes before exiting bios?
