system builder problems?!

Being a company system builder, i am often taking
components out of my computer for temporary reasons. For
example : my comp has 512 ddr ram, but i have used 256mb
in a comp at work, and it will stay there till the
company pays me (or until i buy myself another ram chip).
I get the impression (being new to XP) that i have to
reactivate XP if i re-install more ram in my comp. Is this
true? If this is so,how many times can i do this? Because
i change my hardware an awful lot, can i give my original
disk number and private address details etc, to microsoft
and forego the reactivation problems? Also i have a laptop
with Xp home ed., plus i bought XP home ed. form my home
comp. One has the service pack 1 on (the other doesn't),
can i use same disk for both comp's? or is this illegal? i
would be grateful if someone can give me a complete
rundown on what i can, and can't do! many thanks all. H0bo1

I don't think adding or removing RAM will trigger a reactivation. Very
slight chance if any. You would need to change two or more major
hardware items, such as CPU & video card would most likely trigger it.
It's not an exact science. I swapped out a MB and didn't have to
reactivate. Others have.

I doubt MS will accept your info on a permanent basis. You could be
installing XP on different computers as far as they know.

I'm pretty sure you'll need to get the SP1 from a download or CD from
MS. The CD with sp1 already in just means the files are already updated
on install. I don't believe (I haven't seen one) they just put the
original build on the CD and throw in the SP1 to install afterwards.

No. You have to reactivate only if you make a substantial number
of hardware changes.

You can make as many hardware changes as you want to and
reactivate as often as you need to.

No. However reactivation is not a problem. Worst case, if you
can't do it over the internet (usually you can) it's a quick easy
call to an 800 number.

The same SP1 disk? Yes, no problem.

It only would if you had used up all the lives on other things. Read up
in detail at www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm
