Does a system board replacement require a complete new installation or will
all programs and documents remain as they are.

Please let me know.

Thanks.

When I asked the same of a knowledegible tech, he replied that reinstall
is "usually not necessary." But a back up of the system - or key files
- is always warranted. Here, a few items required reinstall, but
most was in order after a new MB went in.

meron,

Check out the following site for more information than you ever wanted to
know about reinstalling Vista, but were afraid to ask:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/

There's a lot of information there, so take your time and look around to
find exactly what you want to know.

If you have a Retail version of Vista, I would suggest a clean install.
While it is not mandatory, it does give you a clean slate with only the
necessary system drivers to deal with. If you have an OEM version of Vista
then you may be in violation of your EULA if you try to upgrade your system,
clean or otherwise.

dev,

Situations change, and not all of them are the same. There is no "one cure
fits all" in this computer world.

might get by with nothing.
might require an in place upgrade (repair).
might end up requiring a clean install.

start at the top and work down.
staying with same mobo maker and chipset would make a big difference.
