best software for performing a full system backup?

External hd and a good imaging program ; I use Acronis True Image .

What is best--for backup or anything else--is a matter of opinion.
When you ask a question like this, you are highly likely to get
several different opinions, and end up just as confused as you were
before.

That said, here's *my* opinion: Acronis True Image.
