How do I back up all of my system, files etc so that in
the event of a total crash I can restore.

You will need to purchase a third part program to do this.
Norton Ghost for example. There is no way to do it from
within XP as none of it's backup programs support writing
to multiple disks(disk spanning). Keep smiling.

Negative. Yes, Ghost cannot do the backup while using XP. Powerquest
DriveImage 7.0, you can even backup the XP partition while working in XP.

Understand that Symantec quietly bought out Powerquest recently due to this
development. (Can't beat 'em, buy 'em out) Symantec makes the Norton Ghost
product you're referring to.

Same DI 7.0 will span media including CDRs, CDRWs, DVD-RWs. Will also
backup to firewire and USB drives, and networked drives.

The only caution I have for DI 7.0 is that in XP HE, there must be a
password used for the user that is logged in. It backs up the entire user
account etc.
