I have purchased a Maxtel 80 USB hard drive to back up my system with Win XP
Backup.I am getting a message that it cannot complete the backup because I
only have 4 Gb of available space.
Why is that?

I have definitely selected Drive "G" my 80 gb drive but for some reason when
the backup reaches 4gb it stops and says insufficient room on the disk.

Is the destination partition on the 80GB formatted as FAT32? If so there is
your reason. The max size file FAT32 can handle is 4GB.

Convert or reformat the partition as NTFS. To learn how to convert simply go
to Start button->Help and Support and type convert into the search bar. You
can convert from FAT to NTFS non destructively without data loss. (You can
not convert back from NTFS to FAT without either third party software or
without reformatting.)

The last time I tried to backup I got the message that "if the drive was
formated wit Fat32 the max. size of the backup file is 4gb. How do I change
this?

Do you have the drive formatted with NTFS?
What backup software are you using?

I ran chkdsk again with /f
and it converted!!

I just tried to convert to NTFS by going to the command prompt and typing
convert g: /fs:ntfs

I get an error saying that windows found problems with the file system - I
ran chkdsk and it said windows found no problems -- but it still won't
convert to NTFS.

GRRRR!!

What is wrong?
