System and app sounds don't always play

Volume is set to 100, Device Manager says No problem with devices. But
often, I have to reboot to get system sounds to play. That also
applies to app sounds. I have an HP Pavilion notebook with no viruses
or malware. If I play a WAV file, Quick Time Player pops up and plays
it. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thanks.......
 
Gosh, I've always had Windows SOunds disabled, wny do you need distraction?
Can't you play Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir if you need to be distracted?
