Of the many posts I've read on a.c.f. in the last 18 hours about
this deal, there is hardly one which expresses any happiness about it.

That the sysinternals server is now working overtime as users around
the world grab what they can before it's too late, speaks volumes.

Doesn't this tell you what people really think about MS?

2 cents worth...

I can't connect to it at all (from Hong Kong)...

Hummingbird;

Funny you should bring that up. I was just thinking the opposite: This
tells us a lot about ourselves. In this case, three things:

1) everyone loves a good drama (& rumors)
2) often, we succumb to the herd mentality
3) only thing more irresistable that "free" is "free last version"

MS has a deserved reputation for gumming up the good works of the
smaller, nimbler companies. But then again, I haven't seen a big
company do otherwise.

My own take is, this is a passing of a (minor) era. The folks at
sysinternals have been great in their generosity. I'm sad that
sysinternals will eventually go away. I'm very happy for them to be
able to cash in on a lot of hard time/work. I'm happy (but less so)
that MS is bringing in such good talent.

True, true and probably true.
But does it change what many people think about MS? I don't think so.
Most people think that MS will kill off these free utils or start
charging for them or only make them available to bona-fide users.

Quite so.

I'm certainly pleased for Mark and his partner, I hope they screwed
MS for a large wadge :-)

Thanks, an interesting alternative viewpoint.
