I'm trying to run an anti-virus and anti-malware scan using Trend-Micro
Sysclean, which I've used in the recent past without a problem. This time
however, it is refusing to run the malware portion of the scan, saying I
need to download the current malware pattern file and install it in the
Sysclean folder, even though I've done that and it is there in plain sight.

Any idea on what the problem might be?

I would check the Trend FAQs. If this does not help then send a note to
their helpdesk.

OK, will do. By TM's own description the malware scan is supposed to work
from Win 2000 onwards, so maybe they are the source of the problem. Another
possibility - my weekly virus scan with Avast caught a malware infection
(which is why I'm checking again with Sysclean). Perhaps this is a result of
the infection.

Try MBAM and SAS.

I installed SuperAntispyware and ran a check a couple of hours ago. If I
hadn't done that I'd be batting 0 for 2 on your acronyms.

I was just too lazy to type the whole thing out.
However, if you would have done a 'Find' in this ng, it would have been very
apparemt.
Also,if you would have put sas and mbam in Google, it would have also
been apparent.
Hopefully the end result of using the free version of SuperAntiSpyware and
the free version of MalwareBytes AntiMalware will help you out.
Either way, these are two great programs for future reference.

OK, just go easy on the TLAs.

Though I haven't used it for quite a while, from what I remember, it
should work if both the latest version of Virus Pattern file
(lpt$vpn.xxx) and the Virus Clean up Template (TSC.ptn & TSC.exe) are
put into the folder.
May be you need to turn off your other running A-V program that may be
interfering.
