Has to be simple but maybe I'm the one simple.

I have some icons in sys tray I would like to eliminate that don't lend
themselves to an easy permanent killing.

I also have a couple desktop icons (like weather) that I would like to drag
down to the sys tray.

Neither seem cooperative to me.

Anyone? Please keep it simple (like me).

Do you mean the Notification Area, at the far-right of the taskbar?
If so, look at the configuration within the programs being shown there.
There often is a "starts when Windows starts" or similar switch.

If none is available, HIDE the icons. Right-click the taskbar, then click
PROPERTIES|CUSTOMIZE.

Create a shortcut, with a right-click|CREATE SHORTCUT, then drag it to the
Quick Launch area (between the START button and the Notification Area).
If the Q.L. area is not visible, right-click the taskbar|TOOLBARS, and
enable it. Be sure the taskbar isn't locked when you make changes.

Start>Run msconfig and select Startup tab. Unselect all the stuff (crap) you
do not want running all the time.

You can drag items into the Quick Launch bar on far left. Check Toolbar
properties to be sure Quick Launch is enabled.
