Ok all I have a prob, my firend has an HP desktop custombuild. The other
day she went toturn it on and bam, nothing. So i took it to try and
troubleshoot it. When I first tried it it would boot to the blue HP logo
but no further, (I don't even think it made it through the BIOS because I
cannot enter setup.) So I opened her up and disconnected EVERYTHING except
the essentials, video card, monitor, keyboard an mouse. Yes I even
disconnected all CD-rom, HDD and floppy drives. But still same thing, won't
even go into BIOS setup. So I reset the BIOS and still the same problem. I
think maybe the Mobo is toast? Any ideas would be appreciated. Oh BTW the
fans still power up and the system does seem to be getting power.

TIA

Could be the motherboard but I think the power supply is more likely.
You might check the power supply with a voltage meter if you can
(insert probes into back of ATX connector while system is off and when
it "should" be POSTING, but when one has "just" failed the readings
may look fairly good still, might be helpful to try another power
supply.

Inspect the motherboard for failed capacitors, vented, domed, leaky or
residue. It's probalby not economical to replace the motherboard
anyway, HP probably wants a king's ransom for one... in that case it's
upgrade-time.

also check ram if seated properly in the slot

Remove all components but video, RAM, & of course CPU. Plug another PS in
to the MB. Reseat video & RAM. If that doesn't do it then it might be the
MB. Believe it or not it could be the CPU, but doubtful. I had a box with
a CPU that actually went bad.

Hard to service unless it's ATX format but HPs (as with most OEMs) are
notoriously proprietary.
