I have a user that uses Synctoy v2 to copy files back and forth between
home and office via a USB drive (he runs Synctoy on both machines).
The files include his documents, and some Outlook PST files (in a
separate folder).
The folder pairs all use the Echo mode.
Recently some files have been getting copied so that there are multiple
copies on the target, mostly his outlook.pst file. It appears that it
leaves the original file on the target alone, and creates a new one named
outlook.1.pst
In at least one case there was another file that was copied each time,
adding the .1 each time, so the last was something like
file.1.1.1.1.1.1.ext
He shuts down Outlook before running Synctoy (otherwise it wouldn't copy
the PST file at all).
As usual, I am never there when he actually does this so I have to rely
on some secondhand info here.
I have tried to replicate the problem on my own machine by doing things
like leaving Outlook open so the file is in use, or creating/changing the
old target file in some other way while the new one is being copied (it
is first copied to a temp file with a long numeric name, then renamed),
or keeping it open so it can't be deleted... I have not been able to
find a situation where there is a new file with a .1 added in the name.
In the situations that I have tried, it either does not copy the file at
all, or deletes the temporary file when the copy is finished and reports
an error.
Does anyone know what may trigger this?
