SyncToy - Designates selected files for sync even when identical

Just installed SyncToy and was startled to find that it designates 40 files
out of 250 that are identical for "overwrite" synchronization (using Echo
method).

The sizes and file stamps match, down to the second, and both the source and
destination drives are formatted NTFS. This happens even after I change
options to "check file contents."

I have another, old file sync utility, called (interestingly enough)
FileSync, that does not flag these files as being different - and neither
does my regular backup program, FileBack PC. Only SynctToy finds any
difference between these 40 files on my source drive and my backup drive.

Any ideas why? (I'm wondering if it could have something to do with
alternate data streams which may exist in the source files but are not copied
by FileBack PC or FileSync.)

Thanks.

PBear,

NTFS stores last modified time in milliseconds. So, especially if any of the
files on either side have ever been copied and then had the datetime
"touched" by a program that doesn't keep the same resolution, it's possible
that the datetimes on the two sides of the folder pair don't match.

That said, we put some work into loosening the datetime matching criteria in
V1. I hope that helps.

I hope this helps...

I am also experiencing this issue backing up to a SimpleShare NAS. Echo is
identify all the same files as new files.

I looked at the file dates on the NAS and noticed there is no create date.

Is the problem with my NAS?

I do have the same problem even with the latest release v1.2.0.75 :-(

Before "finding" SyncToy I used RoboCopy with pleasure but it misses a big
SyncToy's feature: the preview! :-)

I'm using a few DVD formatted with InCD (UDF format 2.50) to keep a backup:
files copied from HD to DVD are always re-copied, no matter if I rerun it
immediately and (this is weird) if I select "Check file content".

BUT! If the files are then immediately copied back from DVD to HD then
SyncToy do NOT mark them as changed!!!

RoboCopy correctly "mark" these files as "same", but I really prefere to
keep using SyncToy for it's preview feature!

If you have a "debug" version so to reveal the compare process and thus
understanding why are marked "changed", I'll be more than happy to give it a
run and report the output!
