What is causing windows 2k to prompt asking if I want to "synchronize
changes before disconnecting" when I disconnect my modem from the internet?
This malady just started on a computer in use for 3 years.

Have you inadvertently enabled the use of Off-Line files and
Client-Side Caching? This "feature" can be turned on/off via
Windows Explorer > Folder Options > Offline Files Tab.

No that option is grayed out, not checked.
