Syncing Local Drive?

Will Sync Center (Windows Vista with Sync) allow the syncing of a local drive
(i.e. no remote computer)? Example: Syncing Files & Folders on exterior
harddrive, so I can maintain "live" backup for certain files and folders on
the computer's external harddrive using a sync command versus a backup
utility? I find syncing to be effortless, more intuitive, and the results
easier to view and compare than backup files.

Hi Phil,

Incredible as it may sound, Sync Centre doesn't even sync remote computers,
let alone local drives. It only sync's with mobile devices, lile smart
phones. A proper PC-to-PC sync capability was part of the original plan for
Sync Centre; but had to be dropped during the Vista Beta, because they ran
out of time before Vista shipped.

Fortunately, there is a great work-around: SyncToy. This is a free download
from Microsoft.com:

It's ideally suited to your purpose.

I'm tempted to give a commentary of the fact a product group couldn't manage
to deliver on a core use scenario after 5 years; but a couple of guys could
throw togther a more-than-adequate tool to meet the same purpose, in their
spare time, starting in 2005. It's emblematic of all that went wrong. But it
would probably be futile to dwell on it ...

Anyways, give SyncToy a go, and see if it does the trick.
 
Thanks Andrew! I've tried several of Microsoft's Powertoys in Vista, however
they refuse to load saying Operating System is incompatable, do you know if
SyncToy is Vista compatable, as I notice your link indicates \windowsxp?
 
Sync Toy is Vista compatable.

Well........it does sync more then just mobile devices depending on
what version of Vista you use.

As per Microsfts web site

Sync Center is a feature of Windows that allows you to keep
information in sync between your computer and:

• Mobile devices that you plug in to your computer or to which you
connect wirelessly (such as portable music players, digital cameras,
and mobile phones).

• Files stored in folders on network servers. (These are called
offline files because you can access them even when your computer or
the server is not connected to the network.)

• Programs that support Sync Center.

Note: The ability to sync with network folders is not included in
Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, and Windows Vista
Home Premium.



But yes use Sync Toy

Thanks all, SyncToy is working great across Vista-XP platforms. Next test,
is local machine to its own exterior harddrive. Greatly appreciate the
recommendations!!!
 
Andrew...will this program also assist me with my problem?

I have a 1.5T MyBookWorld ll Net Drive. It contains all of my important
documents, programs, and backups. I'm unable to access it. All the folders
have a gray X.

A few weeks ago I had inadvertently hit the 'SYNC' button and couldn't stop
it. I tried to remove it and wasn't successful. My search on 'how to'
informed me that it's not removable (!@#$%^&*).

Now when I check the properties of the drive, it reads: 'File System:
CSC-CACHE' (and gives me an incorrect drive size.) Why would the SYNC program
convert my entire 1.5T drive to a cache?

I know nothing about this Sync cache and I'm afraid if I found some way to
'empty' it, I would be deleting my entire drive. I'm at a total loss.

Wake up gramps. Andrew posted what you are replying to in July of
2007... and he hasn't been back to these groups since last December.
