Synchronizing problems in FP2003

I'm having the hardest time synchronizing my web site in FP 2003. I
have a few local subwebs, each with between 100 and 8,000 pages in.
When attempting to synchronize these with my remote subwebs, after a
random amount of time (could be after 10 pages, could be after a couple
of thousand) I get the error:

Could not find a Web server at 'www.mydomain.com' on port 80. Please
check to make sure that the Web server name is valid and your proxy
settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is
correct, the Web server may be temporarily out of service.

Now, I have a fairly good 'net connection (pages transfer at approx.
30KB/s) and the uptime of my site is very good, so why is it doing
this? Is it a timeout issue and if so, can it be increased?

You connection speed wouldn't have any influence on this problem. Does your
server have the server extensions installed? If not, that might account for
the "could not find site at port 80' error (amongst any number of other
technical issues that the host would need to look into).

Reinstall the extensions through your host account control panel, or ask
your host support to do this. If the above is not the issue, it could be
the host's end, not your system or connection.

I'd have them check the server extensions first.

1) do you have and file over 1MB in any of the webs
2) do you have any thumbs.db in you local site (delete them)

No. Each file is approximately 20-50KB in size.

I don't have any thumbs.db files on my local site.

I've contacted my hosts to find out about the server extensions
situation. I'll post their answer when I get it.

Of course, if anybody has any more suggestions, please feel free to
post them.

Okay, I got the hosts to reinstall the server extensions but it didn't
make any difference. I've asked them if it could be anything else but
I don't know if I'll get any joy out of this. Is there anything else I
could suggest or test?

Don't sync, instead use the Publish with Change Pages only option on the root web and then the
individual subwebs / subsites.

Unfortunately, that makes no difference. I still get the error message
as before.

Have just got this from my hosts:

"I apologize for any inconveniences this issue may have caused you. I
noticed that there was no FTP setup available for your domain. This
might resolve the issue. However, if the FTP connection is dropped
after a while, you usually can execute the noop command to let the
server to keep the connection alive. I am not sure if the option is
available in FrontPage 2003. You may need to review your user manual or
search help in FrontPage for keyword NOOP or Keep Alive."

I don't think that this has anything to do with Frontpage, does it?

I'm thinking I'm back at square one. Can anybody else suggest anything
before I pull my hair out?

No Frontpage/FTP specialists in here, then? :-(

FP doesn't work with all FTP servers, so in this case you may have to use a 3rd Party FTP
application or you will need to switch to a web host that supports the FP extensions.
