Synchronizing computers

Thanks in advance! This might be a basic question - but I don't know where
to start...

I have a Desktop, and I just got a laptop for the road with lots of storage.
Office XP w/Outlook on both... I have them networked together when I am at
home so that they can share the internet and files. So far so good...

Here is what I would like to do...

When I am at home - I want to work on the desktop because it is faster and
has lots of data (client's, documents, etc...) When I go on the road, I
don't have access to those files and I have to think ahead to copy stuff on
to my laptop... then when I get back I have to remember if I modified any
data and make sure to copy those files back to the desktop. Not just files,
but email too... I have to look on two computers to remember what emails I
have sent and received...

There must be a better way, I'm thinking... ULTIMATELY - I would like the
two computers to be excact clones of each other - (except the files that make
the desktop a desktop and the laptop a laptop) and to have them automatically
stay synchronized whenever they are networked together... That would be
perfect!

Has anyone already invented this? How do I find out about it? OR, is this
a pipe dream?

Thanks again!
