Symbol problem

The Symbol drop down appears to be disabled - it occurred out of the blue on my old Word 99 Edition. I bought a new Word 2002 and loaded it onto my PC and the Symbol drop down is still disabled. If I go into the Symbol display the cursor will not highlight individual characters and the highlight remains stuck on the display. Is there a way of enabling the Symbol drop down or is this some other problem?
 
Did you realize this is an Outlook group?
