I have somehow aquired a file on my computer that says it is an avi file,
but it will not run. It also is impossible to delete, move or rename
because it says another person or program is using it. I can't find any
other program that is using it in the task manager, it still won't delete
when I reboot into safe mode, and I can't delete it in the command prompt
either. I can't even quarantine it with Norton Antivirus, and it says it's
not a virus. Can anyone help? I'm at my wits end, since the file appeared
my computer has been running really slowly, and I'm worried what it is doing!

Sounds like one of the latest email viruses going around.
Was the file, perhaps, an attachment to an email? If so,
check out symantec's security response center. They have
a list of what's currently out there and how to fix it
(you don't have to be a Norton user to access the fix's).
I believe their website address is:

Greetings, its most likely not a virus.

To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry
key.

Goto Start>>Run>>Type "regedit" goto

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850D
C73E}\InProcServer32] - Delete this key

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file
property queries on these files.
