Symantac vs. AVG FREE

I currently have AVG. We were just notified at work that we are authorized
to use Symantec AntiVirus free-of-charge on our home computers.

So, which is better?? Could I keep BOTH on?

With both being free, Symantec is better. See:

Symantec:
26 passes + 6 fails = 18.8% failure rate

Grisoft AVG:
6 passes + 20 fails = 76.9% failure rate

If you look at the failures, AVG is getting better but Symantec has had
a better historical success rate. You can install both but only have
one product's on-access scanner running (i.e., use both for manual
scanning, at different times, but only enable of them to be actively
scanning your file operations; use both, load only one on Windows
startup). You can also use the free scanners that are available on the
web sites of several anti-virus makers (they usually download an ActiveX
component that runs locally).

I prefer to take into consideration only the recent (2004) results,

as I am not at all able to see any significance of, say, 1998 results.

The best free scanner is BitDefender (though without on access scanner
in the free version).

Historical performance indicates how well that product's coverage was
for the viruses of that time. What good is a product whose stellar
performance was only yesterday but has proven to suck all the time
before? Respect is something earned. I respect Symantec's NAV more
than I respect AVG. But that doesn't stop me from putting AVG on some
hosts that I build or manage for friends. Something is better than
nothing.

If you like bloated overdone programs then pick anything sold by Symantec...

Symantec...

Symantec sells some good products as well as the bloated "Norton"
desktop AV. They sell the bloated stuff because that is what people
want. Don't blame Symantec for offering people what they want. Symantec
AV is top notch.
 
6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other. Safe computing is the best
antivirus. Stay off the porn/warez/shady web sites. Don't d/l programs
off Kazaa and don't open email attachments unless you know what it is.
Use Firefox to surf the web and keep Windows updated with all security
patches.

There's other stuff that people do, but those basics along with any
current antivirus and firewall will keep your pc healthy. If you want
to feel like you're getting "something for nothing" uninstall AVG and
put on Symantec. I, personally, wouldn't waste my time. I'd just leave
AVG on there and relax and have a beer. Watch some football.... : )

I found Symantec Corporate Edition to be slow and untrustworthy.
