I used to have ZoneAlarm on my W2K system but it seemed to cause some
problems - this was a 2002 version. So I swithced to Sygate and
things were working just fine until recently. I'm have problems where
explorer.exe will take over the CPU for no reason - system idle, not
online(I use dialup), etc.

I've noticed that when I bring up the task manager and kill
explorer.exe then sygate starts hogging the CPU - again idle (except
for the Task Manager) and not online.

Since nothing seems to be able to fix the $^%&$% explorer problem
including patches and a final desperate complete wipe and reinstall,
I'm considering going back to ZoneAlarm or another firewall.
Suggestions? Thoughts? Brickbats?

PS finances require that it be free or really cheap.

Sygate is a very good firewall but I have also had a problem with it,
it's incompatible with my scanner program.

I run Kerio, it also has a free version. There'll be a short learning
curve as each firewall is different....

Get it here:

There are several Trojans that mimic Explorer.exe. Also, explorer.exe should
only be in the Winnt (or in C:\Winnt\ServicePackFiles) folder not in the
System32 folder. If it is in the System32 folder you probably have a Trojan
since Explorer.exe should not be in the System32 folder. Examples:

Sometimes this is not picked up by the anti-virus. A good Anti-Trojan
software is a good thing to have such as BOClean or Trojan Hunter.

Ah, ok, now that I read more carefully I get it. Sorry, didn't mean to
imply anything other than I was apparently brain dead.

:) Sometimes I mean to explain one way but it comes out another way, and I
don't make myself clear as to what I mean. When I talk to myself, I explain
it better, heh. I suppose that is just me.

What scanner do you have? I've got an Epson 1650 USB scanner on my
system. It didn't seem to change the system's functioning when it was
installed.

Mine is a Microtek USB scanner, the software provides something called
a "scanner detector" that loads at startup. With Sygate, it fails to
recognize the scanner maybe one of three times, with Zone Alarm or
Kerio it never fails. This has something to do with the boot sequence
I imagine but I've never figured it out and Kerio works just fine for
me.
