Sygate online security checker

The Sygate online security checker seems to have disappeared. Apparently
Sygate were taken over by Symantec on Oct 10th, who seem to have lost no time
in removing this useful online tool!

So I thought I'd go and run Symantec's online security checker to see if
they'd changed it in any way. It warned me that I had no recognised antivirus
software running (I presume it doesn't recognise this new version of AVG yet
- at least, I HOPE that's the reason). And it failed to run any of the other
tests due to a server problem.

Hmmm.

Hi Alan

Why waste time using Symantec services... just forget about
them.

The most important thing today is to not be a "happy
clicker"....

Now that Sygate has gone, the only firewall tester I know is Steve Gibson's
'Shields up'.

Does anyone know of any others that are reliable and trustworthy, please?

(I can find a few by googling 'firewall test', but I'm reluctant to try the
ones that come up, without knowing anything about them.)

There are quite a few around, but the only one I find gives
comprehensive, accurate and useful results is Security Space, at
http://www.securityspace.com. They are a professional outfit, and they
charge for audits. If you're just looking to perform desktop
(workstation) audits, they only charge $19.95/yr - a small amount for
peace of mind.
