Sygate Firewall Great But!

How does one tell which applications to allow when asked?

Some like my AVG virus scanner, Internet Explorer and my
email program are obvious.

But is there any general rules the less knowledgeable can
follow?

What about NWLINKP.IPX Proto... and NDIS user mode?
These keep trying to access the internet. Would these be
related to my other computer on my network?
 
I cannot help much with Sygate as ive always used Norton
